By the time a film is released in the cinemas, its star has become a household name and the industry’s biggest star.
That star is usually the writer or director.
That’s why it’s been so important to the industry to have a voice of its own, as they’re known in the industry.
But if you want to know why some people love a film, and some people hate it, it’s important to understand the genre it’s about.
Indie films are the film that gets people talking.
“I think people who love indies tend to be the kind of people who don’t get a lot of love for the movies that they’re into,” says indie film star Rachael Berenson.
The indie genre Indie films have come to be known for their ability to explore themes, themes that are so universal, they can be found in any genre.
It’s why, in the past, films like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Big Sick and The Martian made their way to cinemas.
It’s also why indie films are often overlooked by mainstream cinema.
“I’m very, very surprised by the amount of people that are not familiar with the films that we make,” says Berensson.
Berenson, who’s also the director of the documentary film Black Box: The Secret Lives of the Most Popular Films in Hollywood, says the audience for her films is much more varied than that for mainstream films.
“We have a very diverse audience, and there’s a lot more people out there who are into things that we’re into than there are mainstream films that people are into,” she says.
However, there are some films that have become hugely successful in their own right.
In 2014, director and film maker Andy Muschietti won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his film The Grand Budapest Hotel.
And it’s not just the success of his films that has made Berens star shine, but his ability to take a dark, gut-wrenching story and make it relatable.
“I’ve always thought that there’s so much that we can learn from films that make us cry,” she tells the BBC.
“It’s that sort of universal story, it makes you feel something in the middle, and that’s what you get from film.”
It’s the story of a mother and son, a man and a woman, that Berenssen wanted to tell.
‘It was like a dream come true’ Barenson is a regular on stage at the Sundance Film Festival and a frequent guest on BBC Radio 4’s Film Week programme.
And while she’s a big fan of the film festival, she says it was the opportunity to talk to audiences about her films that made her realise the importance of the medium.
“When I started out in film, it was a dream, and it was like, ‘Oh, this is so important, this story is so interesting, let’s do something with it’,” she says of her first films.
“‘What if I made a film that was a kind of dream come a reality?’
That was my big idea, and I wanted to do it.”
She’s been making films for the past 30 years, and says she’s found her calling.
“You can’t get much more creative than that,” she explains.
“And I think the films I’ve made have always made me feel like, you know, ‘Wow, I really want to do this’.” The Grand Budapest was the film Berensa was looking for, and she decided to make it about her father, an army officer who was killed in the war.
It was the first time she made a feature-length film with an adult protagonist, so Berenschels mother had to be involved in the making of the story.
“She said, ‘You know, we should do it this way, this way.’
I was really blown away, and you could see that she really loved the idea,” she recalls.”
My father died in that war.
I’m just really sad about it, and really grateful that I had the chance to make a film with him.”
She and her husband made a movie called My Father’s Army, which followed the story through the lives of soldiers.
Berens father was a pilot in the US army, and the film follows him as he goes through his experiences.
“He’s just kind of lost himself, you could say, in this war,” she laughs.
“But there’s this other side of him, he’s just so strong and determined, and so full of life, and he really wanted to make this film.”
And it’s these scenes of bravery and bravery that Barens mother wanted to share with audiences.
